Geochemistry of Seafloor Hydrothermal Systems
and Geophysical Constraints on the System
R. Zierenberg (zierenberg@geology.ucdavis.edu)
and L. Kellogg (kellogg@geology.ucdavis.edu)
Geology 250 this year will focus on seafloor hydrothermal systems. We will start by reading some of the classic papers on the geochemistry of hydrothermal vents and the fluid rock experiments that constrain them. After covering the basics of vent fluid chemistry, we will move on to explore the state of knowledge of “Mid-Ocean Ridges: Hydrothermal Interactions Between the Lithosphere and Oceans”, primarily using AGU Monograph 148 (2004), with the same title, edited by Christopher R. German, J. Lin, and Lindsay M. Parson as a starting reference. The initial portion of the class will be dominantly lectures presented by Z, with abundant discussion. As the class progresses we will evolve toward more student lead discussions of the core papers in AGU Mono. 148 and supporting literature, and presentation of student research projects/papers. Initial meeting to determine the meeting time for the course will be held Friday, Sept. 28, at 3:30 PM in the Durrell Room.
