Chapter 5. The Cambrian Explosion

These pages are arranged in some sort of system, believe it or not.
  1. Substantial comments or mini-essays, often with links of their own. They are laid out in the order I deal with them in the Chapter.
  2. Pages that consist almost entirely of Web links on a particular topic.
  3. Small comments and asides ("footnotes", if you like), including useless information, again arranged in order. I have listed them under page number as well as topic.

Mostly Web links

Ediacaran Animals

The Beginning of the Cambrian: Small Shelly Fossils

Larger Cambrian Animals

Trilobites

The Burgess Fauna

When Was The Origin of Metazoans

When did metazoans evolve? Within the "Cambrian explosion", or much earlier?

Bilaterians

Bilaterians from 600 Ma? BBC News OnLine, June 4, 2004. The paper is published online by Science, and will be freely available on the Web in 2005. This is an extreme claim, and I'm not convinced by the picture. More important, Stefan Bengtson isn't impressed either.
