Geochemistry, volcanology, and igneous petrology. Research focuses on timescales of magmatic processes, from melt generation and transport to storage and crystallization in crustal reservoirs, and on tracing the distribution and abundance of crustal materials that have been recycled through the mantle. The analytical techniques used to address these problems include uranium-series disequilibria measured in volcanic rocks and minerals and stable isotope measurements (oxygen and lithium) of fresh and altered midocean ridge basalts.
