Geology is as geology does. James Tautfest

The Geology Department at the University of California, Davis, maintains excellent research facilities for both field and laboratory research. The department is supported by an administrative and technical staff responsible for maintaining and operating the electron microprobe, the stable isotope mass spectrometers, drafting and illustrating, photography, computers and networking, and preparation of thin and polished sections. The department maintains teaching collections of rocks, fossils, and maps; campus libraries house outstanding research and teaching collections in geology, paleontology, geochemistry, and geophysics.

Spero labDepartmental facilities include a fully automated CAMECA electron microprobe, Fisons Optima and Finnigan MAT 251 light stable isotope ratio mass spectrometers with automated capabilities for analyzing carbon and oxygen isotope ratios on very small carbonate samples, carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios on organic matter and oxygen and hydrogen isotope ratios on waters, a scanning electron microscope with EDS X-ray and image processing capabilities, X-ray fluorescence and diffraction spectrometers, a fluid inclusion heating and freezing stage, mineral separation and thin section laboratories.

The department operates a variety of computer facilities, including computer-equipped classroom and research labs with Macintosh workstations, Sun workstations, GIS capability, a portable computer lab, and a variety of printers, scanners, digitizing tables, and associated equipment. The department operates the W. M. Keck Center for Active Visualization in the Earth Sciences (KeckCAVES), and participates in the community Beowulf cluster operated by the Computational Science and Engineering Center. UC Davis is a member of NPACI which provides access to computational resources at national facilities.

GPSPortable field equipment includes a gravimeter, magnetic susceptibility bridge, 12-channel signal-enhancement seismograph, global positioning system (GPS, photo left) receivers, rock drill, and two flux gate magnetometers.

Specialized equipment is available in various research laboratories: gas and solid-medium high pressure apparatus for experimental petrology and rock deformation, including a MA6/MA8 multianvil device for ultrahigh pressure phase equilibria and mineral synthesis, Fourier transform infraredOBS spectrometer, cryogenic magnetometer, ion bombardment thinners, off-line vacuum extraction lines for sample preparation of dissolved inorganic carbon from waters, organic matter, silicates and carbonate samples for stable isotope analysis, and paleontological and biological preparation laboratories.

In addition to our own in-house facilities, the department has access to a staffed machine shop and additional analytical facilities are available through the Molecular Structure Facility on campus. The Bodega Marine Laboratory (three hours west of Davis) is administered by the Davis campus and also provides extensive facilities for field research on marine systems.
